# Dodo Payments

> Connect Dodo Payments to accept cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and local payment methods on your SellAuth store, with Dodo acting as merchant of record.

Dodo Payments takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and a range of local payment methods through one connection. Dodo is the merchant of record: it is the legal seller on the receipt, it works out and collects sales tax or VAT at checkout, and it pays the proceeds out to you.

Setup needs one value, a live-mode API key. SellAuth creates everything else in your Dodo account for you: the webhook endpoint that reports payments and a "Pay What You Want" product per currency that every order is charged against.

<Warning>
  Live payments and payouts only start once Dodo has verified your account, which usually takes 1 to 3 business days. The API key saves fine before that, but buyers cannot pay until verification is complete.
</Warning>

## Settings

**API Key.** A live-mode key with write access, created under **Developer > API Keys** in the Dodo dashboard. Write access is required because SellAuth creates the webhook endpoint and products through the API.

**Checkout form.** **Inline** renders Dodo's payment form directly inside your SellAuth checkout, so buyers never leave the page. **Redirect** sends them to Dodo's hosted checkout page and brings them back once they have paid. Inline is the default and takes cards and Google Pay. Apple Pay is only available with Redirect for now, so choose Redirect if Apple Pay matters more to your buyers than staying on the page.

**Prices include tax.** Off by default, which means Dodo adds the applicable tax on top of your price at checkout and you receive the full amount. Turn it on if your prices already include tax: buyers then pay exactly the total shown in your store and Dodo carves the tax out of it, so you receive slightly less.

## Create an API key

<Steps>
  <Step title="Switch the Dodo dashboard to live mode">
    Test-mode keys are rejected. Use the mode toggle in the [Dodo dashboard](https://app.dodopayments.com) and make sure it says Live.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create the key">
    Go to **Developer > API Keys**, click **Add API Key**, name it SellAuth and enable **write access**. Copy the key right away, Dodo only shows it once.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste it and save">
    Put it in **API Key** on the SellAuth payment method page, pick the checkout form you want and save.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  On save, SellAuth registers a webhook endpoint in your Dodo account and creates a product named after your shop, for example "My Shop order (USD)". More products appear as buyers pay in other currencies. Leave them in place: deleting the endpoint stops orders from completing, and deleting a product breaks checkout in that currency until it is recreated.
</Note>

## Test it

Buy something cheap from your own shop with a real card. Dodo's own test cards only work with test-mode keys, which SellAuth does not accept.

## Fees and limits

All of the [shared method settings](/guides/payment-methods#settings-shared-by-every-method) apply, including a percentage or fixed fee or discount for choosing Dodo Payments, a minimum and maximum order amount, and a custom checkout button label and icon. Orders under 0.50 USD cannot be paid with Dodo Payments.

Dodo settles in the currency of the product it charges, which is your shop currency unless you set a currency override on the method. Buyers in other countries may see the amount in their local currency if adaptive currency is enabled in your Dodo account.

## Troubleshooting

**Saving the key reports a webhook or product error.** The key is a test-mode key, or it was created without write access. Create a new live-mode key with write access and save again.

**Buyers see a higher total on the Dodo page than in the store.** Tax is being added on top. Turn on **Prices include tax** if you would rather absorb it.

**The inline form never appears.** An ad blocker or a strict browser setting is blocking the Dodo frame. Switch the checkout form to **Redirect**, or tell the buyer to use the "Open the payment page in a new tab" link that appears when the form fails to load.

**Apple Pay is missing.** The inline form does not offer Apple Pay for now. Switch the checkout form to Redirect and it appears on the hosted page.

**Payments succeed but orders stay pending.** The webhook endpoint was removed or edited in the Dodo dashboard. Open the method in SellAuth, re-enter the API key and save to recreate it.
