# PayPal

> Connect PayPal Goods & Services to accept PayPal balance and card payments, using PayPal Checkout (REST API) or the legacy Payments Standard email setup.

This is PayPal Goods & Services. Buyers pay with their PayPal balance or a card, and the payment carries PayPal's buyer protection. For the Friends & Family variant, see [PayPal Friends & Family](/guides/payment-methods/paypal-ff).

SellAuth offers two ways to connect. Pick one under **Type** when you create the method.

| | PayPal Checkout (recommended) | PayPal Payments Standard |
| - | - | - |
| Setup | A PayPal app with client credentials | Your PayPal email, nothing else |
| Account needed | PayPal **Business** account | Any PayPal account |
| Buyer pays with | PayPal balance, card, and local methods | PayPal balance or card |
| Subscriptions | Automatic recurring billing | Manual renewal by e-mail invoice |
| Extra options | Card-only checkout, shipping inputs | None |

PayPal Checkout uses the REST API and is the integration PayPal maintains going forward. Payments Standard is the legacy email-based (IPN) flow: quicker to set up, but no automatic recurring billing, local payment methods or card-only option.

## PayPal Checkout

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the PayPal Developer Dashboard">
    Sign in at [developer.paypal.com](https://developer.paypal.com/dashboard/applications/live) with your PayPal Business account.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Switch the toggle to Live">
    Not Sandbox. Sandbox credentials cannot take real money.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create an app">
    Go to **Apps & Credentials**, click **Create App**, name it (SellAuth works), and choose the **Merchant** type.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy the Client ID and Secret">
    Paste both into the matching fields on the SellAuth payment method page.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the account email and save">
    Use the PayPal email of the same Business account you created the app under.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  The email and the app must belong to the same PayPal account. Mismatched credentials save without complaint and only fail when a buyer tries to pay.
</Warning>

### PayPal Checkout options

**Only Card Payments** restricts the PayPal checkout page to cards, hiding the PayPal account option. Useful when you want PayPal purely as a card processor.

**Enable Shipping Inputs** asks the buyer for a shipping address during PayPal checkout. Turn it on if you sell physical goods and want PayPal's address on the transaction record.

## PayPal Payments Standard

Enter your PayPal email in **PayPal E-mail** and save. That is the whole setup. Payments are confirmed through IPN, and subscriptions on this method renew by e-mail invoice rather than automatic charge.

## Fees and limits

All [shared method settings](/guides/payment-methods#settings-shared-by-every-method) apply. PayPal also supports **currency override**, which bills the invoice in a currency you choose rather than your shop currency. Use it when your PayPal account settles in a specific currency.

## Troubleshooting

**Payments fail after the settings saved without errors.** The credentials are sandbox, or the app belongs to a different account than the email.

**Create App is missing in the developer dashboard.** The account is not a Business account. Upgrade it in PayPal or use Payments Standard instead.

**Local payment methods never appear.** They are available on PayPal Checkout only, and PayPal decides which to show based on the buyer's country and the transaction currency.
