# Square

> Connect Square to accept cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Cash App on your SellAuth store.

Square takes credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Cash App through one connection, settling into your own Square account.

Setup needs two values from two different Square sites. The **production access token** comes from the developer console, and the **location ID** from your Square dashboard.

## Get your production access token

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Square Developer Console">
    Go to [developer.squareup.com](https://developer.squareup.com/console/en/apps) and sign in.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create an application">
    Any name works. When asked what you are building, choose **Accept payments**, then **Myself**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Switch to Production">
    There is a Sandbox and Production toggle. Sandbox tokens will not take real money.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy the production access token">
    Paste it into **Production Access Token** on the SellAuth payment method page.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  A sandbox token saves without an error and then fails on every real payment. Check that the toggle says Production before copying.
</Warning>

## Get your location ID

Square does not show the location ID as a field anywhere. It has to be read out of the URL.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your Square locations">
    Go to [Locations](https://app.squareup.com/dashboard/locations) in the Square dashboard.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the location you sell from">
    Usually the first row. Click it, then click **Edit location**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the ID from the address bar">
    The URL now looks like `https://app.squareup.com/dashboard/locations/LXXXXXXXXXXXX`. Everything after the last slash is your location ID.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste it and save">
    Put it in **Location ID** on the SellAuth payment method page and save the settings.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Fees and limits

All of the [shared method settings](/guides/payment-methods#settings-shared-by-every-method) apply, including a percentage or fixed fee or discount for choosing Square, a minimum and maximum order amount, and a custom checkout button label and icon.

## Troubleshooting

**Payments fail immediately.** Usually a sandbox token. Regenerate it with the toggle set to Production.

**Payments fail with a location error.** The location ID belongs to a different Square account than the token, or you copied part of the URL beyond the ID.

**The method cannot be selected at checkout.** The order total falls outside the minimum or maximum amount on the method. Hovering the method at checkout gives the reason.
