# Venmo

> Accept Venmo Friends & Family payments on SellAuth by forwarding your Venmo notification emails so orders process automatically.

Venmo payments land in your own Venmo account. SellAuth has no direct connection to Venmo and detects payments by reading the notification emails Venmo sends you. Once forwarding is set up, orders process automatically.

This is the Friends & Family flow, so payments carry no buyer protection and cannot be reversed by you.

<Warning>
  Venmo's terms restrict personal accounts to personal payments, and accounts showing a commercial pattern are limited or closed. Keep a second payment method enabled.
</Warning>

## Settings

**Tag.** Your Venmo handle, shown to buyers on the payment page.

**E-mail.** The mailbox receiving your Venmo notifications. Must be the same address you forward from.

**Venmo account information.** Free text shown to buyers. Venmo often asks the sender to confirm the last four digits of the recipient's phone number before releasing the payment, so enter that here, for example `If asked to confirm the last 4 digits of our phone number, enter 1234.` Buyers who hit that prompt without the information usually abandon the payment or open a ticket.

**Override notes.** Replaces the notes SellAuth generates for matching payments to invoices, as a comma-separated list. Notes that resemble ordinary personal transfers draw less attention. Business plan only.

## Set up email forwarding

Payments are not detected until this is done. The steps below are for Gmail, and other providers have the same features under different names.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add the forwarding address">
    In Gmail, open **Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP** and click **Add a forwarding address**. Enter `payments@sellauth.com`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the forwarding request">
    Gmail sends a confirmation email to that address, and SellAuth returns it to you automatically. It may land in spam. Click the link inside to confirm.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create a filter">
    Back in **Forwarding and POP/IMAP**, create a filter with `venmo@venmo.com` in the **From** field, the address Venmo sends notifications from. Click **Create filter**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Forward matching mail">
    Tick **Forward it to** and pick `payments@sellauth.com`. Create the filter.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fill in the method settings">
    Enter your Venmo tag and the same email address you forward from, then save.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Use a filter rather than forwarding everything. Only the Venmo notification emails need to be forwarded.
</Note>

## Test it

Buy something cheap from your own shop and pay it with Venmo. The order should complete without any action from you. If it stays at **Confirming**, the forwarded email is not arriving.

## Troubleshooting

**Orders never process.** Forwarding was never confirmed, or the filter does not match. Check that Gmail lists `payments@sellauth.com` as a confirmed forwarding address, and that the From value matches the sender on a real Venmo notification.

**Buyers are asked for extra details and abandon the payment.** Fill in the Venmo account information field with the last four digits of your phone number.

**Some payments are not matched.** Check the amount and the note on the payment. A payment that does not match the order is not matched automatically, and has to be processed from the invoice page.
